Solving the
Laundry Dilemma
No one likes dirty undies accumulating in the
house, but a Launderette may be an unattractive
option. The solution may be a washing machine of
your very own; however, major appliances should
never be bought on a whim. You need information
- the inside scoop if you will, into the world
of washers. If a new washing machine is what you
are craving, you have come to the right place.
We'll tell you everything you need to know to
find the perfect washer for you.
Before heading down appliance alley, there are a
few facts to consider. The first is the size of
the machine that you need. Size falls into two
categories; the first is the actual dimensions
of the machine to ensure that it will fit in the
space that is allotted for it. The second is the
capacity inside that will tell you how much
laundry you can do. This information will help
to narrow your search, since washers come in a
wide variety of sizes.
Efficiency
Unless you like writing large checks to your
utility companies, the next factor to consider
will be the efficiency of the machine. The most
efficient machines will come equipped with Fuzzy
Logic. This funny name refers to a sensory
system that can constantly monitor the
conditions inside your washer for the most
efficient cleaning process. It will control
water intake, time and temperature, rinse cycle
and spin speed. Although Fuzzy Logic will add to
the overall cost of the machine, you will make
up the difference with more efficient wash
cycles.
Another way to assess the energy efficiency of a
washer is to check the Eurolabel, which is an
alphabetical classification system that will
tell you the quality of the wash function and
the energy efficiency of the machine. This
ranking runs from "A" to "G", with "A" being the
best machines on the market. While you may not
find many "A" machines around (Tricity Bendix
makes one at a reasonable price), you can rest
assured that any machine with a rating of "C" or
above should give you efficient function.
How Fast can you Spin?
Spin speed is another variable in washing
machines that seems confusing at first. However,
follow this simple guideline; the faster your
spin speed, the shorter the drying time will be.
This can be a huge plus if you use a tumble
dryer and you want to cut down on the costs of
running that dryer as much as possible.
Front vs. Top
Sometimes the choice to go with a front loading
machine is as simple as knowing that you will be
placing it
underneath a countertop or tumble
dryer. Other times, it is important to
understand the difference between the two so you
can make the best choice. Front loaders tend to
be a bit pricier, but have many advantages
including less detergent usage, gentler on
clothes and quieter operation. Front loading
machines also have a reputation for being more
energy efficient overall. Whirlpool offers some
economic choices in front loaders, while Maytag, Zanussi and Electrolux have models for the more
discriminating tastes.
A washing machine can be a great investment that
will keep your wardrobe squeaky clean without
constant trips to the Launderette. With some
shopping savvy, you will find the best machine
for you that you will get years of use from. |
