Refrigerators for Every Taste and Budget
Shopping for a new refrigerator can be a
daunting task. First you have to determine how
big you want
your unit, then you must select a configuration
and finally you are forced to choose among a
plethora of special features. What is a frazzled
fridge shopper to do? First, relax in the
knowledge that you will be able to find the
perfect refrigerator unit for your family. Then
read this article to find the most helpful tips
in shopping for the perfect fridge.
Size Selection
Size is an important consideration with a
refrigerator. If you buy one that is too small,
you will not be able to keep all of your food
adequately chilled. If you select a unit that is
too large, you waste space and money keeping an
empty unit cold. A size of around 9 to 10 cubic
feet is generally appropriate for most families.
It is also important to know exactly how much
space you have in your kitchen to house your new
refrigerator. Not all fridges are created equal,
and not all spaces created for these units are
the same size. The solution? Measure, measure
and measure again. Seriously, measure the width
of the space in your kitchen three times; once
at the top, once in the middle and once at the
bottom.
When you go to the kitchen appliance shop, take
your tape measure and follow the same guidelines
to determine how big a unit is. It is also a
good idea to measure the refrigerator door and
the kitchen space to ensure that you will be
able to open that door all the way when
necessary. Consider the side
that the door is on as well. Some kitchens are
designed for a door that opens on the left and
others on the right. Some refrigerators offer
doors that can be installed either way to add
versatility to the unit you might be
considering. A side-by-side usually will not
take up as much space with the door open, but
can be a bigger unit overall.
Consider Configuration
Refrigerators come in a variety of
configurations, with a side-by-side American
fridge freezer model as the most popular choice.
These units will often come with an ice and
water dispenser in the door, adding to the
convenience of the model. Other configurations
include the refrigerator above with a pull out
freezer below. This option provides plenty of
freezer space. You can also purchase an alone
refrigerator that fits neatly under the counter
which is ideal for those who don't require the
addition of a freezer. You can either buy these
refrigerators with or without a small freezer
box at the top of the unit. Finally, you can
choose the traditional and most economical model
that includes a freezer above and the
refrigerator below.
Energy Efficiency
Since that big box in the kitchen will be using
a significant amount of your home's juice to
run, you want to make sure that you purchase a
unit that will be energy efficient. The best way
to evaluate
efficiency is to check the Eurolabel before you
buy. The Eurolabel is a method of ranking
appliances in terms of efficiency, and consists
of the letters of the alphabet from 'A' to 'G'.
If you find an appliance with an 'A' rating, you
can rest assured that you are buying the
"greenest" appliance that will keep your energy
bills as low as possible.
A refrigerator will take up a lot of space and
use plenty of energy. However, the right
refrigerator will serve your family well for
many years, making it a valuable addition to
your kitchen. |
