Baby, It's
Cold Inside!
You're Guide for Finding the Perfect Freezer
For some families, the freezer that is attached
to the refrigerator unit is sufficient to meet
their needs. For others, such as the bigger
clans, those who grow their own veggies, or the
thrifty who buy meat and other frozen foods in
bulk, a freezer can be a valuable purchase.
Freezers like this are not designed for beauty,
since they are generally kept in a corner of the
garage or utility room. However, they do their
job very well, which is to keep your extra food
in a deep freeze until you are ready to use it.
Freezers tend to be a bit less expensive than
some other types of appliances, but that doesn't
mean that you shouldn't take your time and do
your homework to find the best freezer unit to
meet your needs. There are a number of different
factors to consider when you are in the market
for a freezer.
Get it Off your Chest
The chest variety of freezer is a popular model
for a number of reasons. This type of freezer is
like a large box that opens from the top and
will probably include a few racks that can be
placed inside the cavity to maximize space. This
freezer will operate at peak energy efficiency,
but digging into it to find that side of beef
you purchased last year may be easier said than
done. For convenience purposes, you can opt for
an upright freezer that is similar in size and
configuration to a standard refrigerator. This
is a good choice if you will be accessing the
goods inside regularly or if you are limited in
space. However, the upright models tend to use
more energy than the chest variety, making them
more expensive to run.
Another consideration when you are choosing the
type of freezer that will work best is the
defrost function. Chest freezers usually work on
the manual defrost mode, meaning you will need
to defrost, drain and clean out the cavity
regularly. Frost-free varieties will do all of
that hard work for you, and are generally found
in the upright models. There has been some
question about whether frost-free freezers can
cause freezer burn to foods, but as long as you
wrap your foods well in heavy-duty aluminium
foil or good quality freezer bags, you should
have no problem with food staying fresh and
unscathed.
Features to Look For
While freezers don't generally come with as many
bells and whistles as other types of appliances,
there are some special features to think about.
One valuable extra is a door alarm that will
sound if the temperature inside the freezer goes
above a safe freezing level. You can also
request a food spoilage warranty that says the
manufacturer will cover the cost of any food
that is lost due to a malfunction of the unit. A
temperature control will give you flexibility in
keeping different types of foods in your freezer
and save you energy by allowing you to adjust
the control appropriately. If you have small
children in the home, safety features like a
magnetic door seal and a lock are essential to
keep little ones safe and sound.
A freezer can be a wonderful option that will
give you the opportunity to buy certain types of
food in bulk and enjoy the fruits of your
hobbies. The right freezer will serve your
family well so you can enjoy your frozen goodies
year-round. |
