The Inside
Scoop on Electric Cookers
If you are in the market for a new oven, you are
in luck indeed. Electric cookers offer plenty of
selections today - so many that it may be rather
challenging to choose. What you need is
information before you hit the appliance shop so
you know exactly what you are looking for. There
are a few key functions and features that you
will want to check out when it comes time to
make your purchase.
Capacity
It may seem like all ovens are created equal,
but that is not so. Electric cookers come in a
variety of sizes that can accommodate any size
space and family. To ensure that you get enough
oven for your needs, you can follow these
guidelines:
1-2 people: Look for an oven capacity of up to 3
cubic feet.
A family of 4: You will need as much as 4 cubic
feet.
A baseball team: More than 4 cubic feet is the
choice for you!
In addition to selecting your cooker by
capacity, you will want to measure the space
that your new oven will be going into to ensure
that the outer dimensions of your unit will fit.
What's your Type?
There are many variations in electric cookers,
and most of the differences have to do with how
the food is heated and the energy efficiency of
the unit. A dual-fuel cooker will give you the
best of both worlds by combining a gas range
that heats quickly with an electric oven that
heats evenly. You can also opt for a
fan-assisted oven that uses a fan to circulate
the hot air in the oven more evenly. Zanussi
makes some nice models of fan-assisted electric
cookers. You can also try the fan-forced units
that will create an even steadier temperature
throughout the oven cavity.
Cleaning Ease
One of the yuckiest parts of a cooker is
cleaning it, but clean you must if you want to
keep your oven safe and efficient. It pays to
shop for the easiest cleaning choices in
cookers, because the more automated the cleaning
process, the less time you spend scrubbing and
scouring your unit. The first cleaning option is
the catalytic, or self cleaning, option. The
sides, back and roof of the oven are treated
with a material that can absorb grease splashes
and then burn them off when the temperature in
the oven rises above 200 degrees.
A pyrolytic cleaning system is probably the most
efficient type of self cleaners, and requires
the least amount of manual work. With this
process, the oven is heated to 500 degrees,
which reduces all stains and spills to ash that
can be wiped up once the cavity cools. Another
important feature that makes clean-up a snap is
an enamel top that does away with the coils and
burners of stoves past. Simply use a special
cleaner designed for this purpose to give your
surface a quick wipe-down after use. It is
indeed maintenance at its finest and easiest.
An electric cooker can be a great choice in
meeting all of your family's needs. With some
basics under your belt, you will be prepared to
shop for a cooker that will give your family
years of use. |
